You’ve heard the statistics: 10,000 Boomers are retiring every day; 40 million Americans are providing care for an elder loved one; women 50+ are abandoning their careers to provide this care. But people aren’t statistics.
No doubt you’ve heard these stories within your own organization. Colleagues you work with everyday who are in this situation, taking time off work to drive their mom to a doctor’s appointment, inquiring about company resources to help, or asking for a flexible work schedule, maybe even a leave of absence.
We’ve heard these stories too. We wanted to share one with you. A success story.
Robert & Ann - El Cerrito, CA
Ann works full-time and is a mother of two middle school children. She’s also a daughter; Ann takes care of her father, Robert, who suffers from Alzheimer’s. Balancing her career with caring for both her children and father, Ann needed help from someone she could trust.
While Robert suffers from Alzheimer’s, he’s still very independent. He lives in his own home, enjoys an active social life in church, and enjoys getting outside. Ann knew she didn’t need a live in caretaker, nor someone who was going to be there all day, every day. Ann found Envoy researching her options online and decided to give it a try.
Envoy matched Ann and Robert with Kristin, who has personal experience with Alzheimer’s. Now Kristin picks up Robert every week to take him to church and then for a walk around the park, often sending pictures to Ann to share the experience.
For Ann, the hope is that keeping Robert social and active may also help slow the progress of his Alzheimer’s and delay the need for assisted living, potentially saving the family thousands of dollars in the long term. Ann has the peace-of-mind that she was looking for and Robert is able to live life to the fullest.
This is just one of thousands of stories we’re proud to be a part of helping families balance career, kids and elder care. We also proud to be working with major employers who are leading the way in tackling this challenge and empowering their employees.
